Resume or CV?

The two words mean different things in different places. In the US and Canada, a resume is the short, tailored document for most jobs, and a CV is a longer academic record. In the UK, Ireland and the Gulf, CV is simply the everyday name for that short document. India and Australia use both words.

Whatever it is called, the same rule holds: tailor it to the job and the country. Once it is ready, run it through the free resume checker and the resume job match.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

In the US and Canada a resume is the short, tailored document for most jobs, and a CV is a long academic record of research, publications and teaching. In the UK, Ireland and the Gulf, “CV” is the everyday word for what Americans call a resume. India and Australia use both words for the same short document.

No single format fits everywhere, but a safe base is a clean, single-column layout with a short summary, jobs in reverse-chronological order with month and year dates, and results written as numbers. Then adjust length, photo, personal details, paper size and spelling for the country you are applying to.

It depends on the country. Employers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia generally expect no photo, because it can expose details protected by anti-discrimination rules. In the UAE and much of the Gulf a professional photo is common, and in India it is optional. Follow the norm of the country where the job is.
