Resignation letter for a better job opportunity

When you leave for a better role, keep the letter short and grateful. Say that you have accepted a new opportunity, confirm your notice period and last working day, and offer a proper handover. You do not need to name the new employer or mention the salary, and it is wiser not to compare the two companies in writing.

Tips for this resignation letter

  • Resign only after you have the new offer letter in hand and have accepted it in writing, not on the strength of a verbal offer or an email promise.
  • Do not mention the new salary, designation or company name in the letter; a simple line about a new opportunity is enough and keeps your HR file neutral.
  • If your current employer makes a counter-offer, decide before you resign whether you would ever accept one, so the conversation does not catch you off guard.
  • Confirm the joining date with your new employer only after your current manager or HR has agreed to your last working day in writing.

FAQ

Questions about this resignation letter

You are not obliged to. Many people share it verbally once the resignation is accepted, but the letter itself should stay general. If your appointment letter has a non-compete or non-solicitation clause, read it first and check with HR before discussing the new role in detail.

In most Indian companies an email to your reporting manager with HR in copy is accepted as a formal resignation. Some firms also want a signed letter or a submission on the HR portal, so follow whatever your company policy or appointment letter asks for.

Ask your manager for early release in writing, offer a clear handover plan and mention leave adjustment or a notice buyout as per policy. Until your current employer agrees, tell the new company your official last working day rather than an assumed earlier date.
