How the last working day is calculated

There is no single rule in India — each company’s appointment letter and HR policy decides. This calculator uses the two conventions HR teams most commonly follow:

  • Notice in days: your notice starts the day after you resign, so resigning on 1 October with 30 days’ notice gives a last working day of 31 October.
  • Notice in months: add the months to your resignation date and step back one day. Resigning on 15 March with two months’ notice ends on 14 May. When the next month is shorter, the date is clamped to its last day first, so 31 January plus one month becomes the end of February, minus one day.
  • Leave adjustment and buyout days are then taken off the end, moving your last working day earlier.

Some companies count the resignation day as day one, or count only working days. If yours does, the date can shift by a day or more, so check your appointment letter and get the date confirmed by HR in writing.

Buyout and early release

A buyout means paying the company for the notice days you do not serve. The estimate here is basic salary ÷ 30 × buyout days; your company may use gross pay or CTC instead, and taxes or other dues can be adjusted in your full and final settlement.

Worked example

60 days notice with leave and a buyout

What goes in

Resignation date: 3 March, notice: 60 days Leave adjusted: 5 days, buyout: 10 days Monthly basic: ₹40,000

What you get

Sixty days after 3 March is 2 May, so the notice period ends then. Taking off 5 leave days and 10 buyout days moves the last working day back by 15 days, to 17 April, so 45 of the 60 calendar days are served. The buyout estimate is ₹40,000 ÷ 30 × 10 = ₹13,333. The tool marks this as an estimate, because some companies use gross salary or CTC, or a different number of days, and may recover the amount from the full and final settlement.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming leave can always be adjusted against notice; many companies allow it only with approval or not at all, so check the policy first.
  • Using 30 days when the contract says one month, or the other way round; for some dates these give different last working days.
  • Telling a new employer your joining date before HR confirms your last working day in writing.

When to use it: Use the notice period calculator to plan your last working day and buyout; when you are ready to resign, the resignation letter generator writes the letter itself.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Policies differ. This calculator treats a day-based notice as starting the day after you resign, and a month-based notice as ending the day before the same date next month. Your appointment letter or HR policy has the final word, so ask HR to confirm the last working day in writing.

Many companies allow unused earned or privilege leave to be adjusted against the notice period, but some do not, and some allow it only with manager approval. Enter the days you plan to adjust and the calculator moves your last working day earlier. Get the adjustment approved before you tell your new employer a joining date.

Usually as a daily rate multiplied by the days you do not serve. This free calculator uses monthly basic salary divided by 30, but companies may use gross salary or CTC and may divide by 26 or the days in the month, so treat the figure as an estimate. Sometimes the new employer reimburses it.

The calendar date still counts, but in practice your final day at the desk is often the Friday before. HR usually decides whether the Saturday or Sunday appears on your relieving letter. The calculator flags weekend dates so you can confirm this with HR.
