What a good resignation letter in India includes
HR teams mostly look for three facts: that you are resigning, from which date, and when your last working day will be. Everything else is courtesy. Keep it short, polite and free of complaints — the letter goes into your file and may be checked when a future employer verifies your employment.
- A clear subject line, such as “Resignation from the post of Business Analyst”.
- Your resignation date and your notice period as written in your appointment letter.
- Your last working day, so there is no confusion about the relieving date.
- A line of thanks and a promise of a proper handover.
Sending it and asking for early release
Email the letter to your reporting manager and copy HR, or submit it on your HR portal if your company uses one. Ask for an acknowledgement and keep the sent email safe until you receive your relieving letter and experience letter.
If your new employer wants you to join sooner, ask for early release politely and offer something in return: a handover document, adjusting unused earned leave, or paying a notice buyout as per policy. Check the numbers first with our notice period calculator and see what the new offer is worth with the salary hike calculator.
Changing jobs is also a good moment to refresh your resume headline and share a link to your work with your new team.
