Resignation letter for higher studies

Leaving for a master’s degree, MBA or any full-time course is a reason most managers respect. Mention the course briefly, give your last working day and promise a clean handover. Keep the door open, since you may want to return or ask for a reference later, and avoid sounding as if the job pushed you out.

Tips for this resignation letter

  • Resign only after your admission is confirmed and any fee deposit or visa step that depends on your job status has been sorted out.
  • Ask for your experience letter well in advance if the university or visa office needs it, since some companies take a few weeks to issue one.
  • If your company offers study leave or a sabbatical, ask HR about it before resigning; it may let you return without starting afresh.
  • Keep your salary slips, Form 16 and PF details handy, because you may need them for education loans, scholarships or visa paperwork.

FAQ

Questions about this resignation letter

It is optional. Naming the course and university adds context and is harmless, but a line saying you are leaving to pursue higher studies is enough. Share details if you are comfortable, especially if you may ask your manager for a recommendation letter later.

Yes, you can request early release politely, giving the course start date and a handover plan. Offer leave adjustment or a notice buyout as per policy. Your employer can decline, so resign early enough that the full notice period still fits before classes start.

Relieving and experience letters are standard HR documents, but a recommendation letter is a personal favour from your manager. Ask for it separately, a few weeks before you leave, and share the format or points the university expects so it is easy to write.
