Registration, licensing and visa rules change. Treat this as an overview and confirm every step on the official regulator and immigration websites before you apply or pay anyone.
Steps before your CV is read
- Know which regulator oversees the school. Private schools in Dubai come under the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Abu Dhabi schools under the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and Sharjah private schools under the Sharjah Private Education Authority. Federal requirements from the Ministry of Education (MOE) also apply. Each sets approval rules for teaching staff, and the school will usually tell you which checks your appointment needs.
- Match your qualifications to the subject. Schools generally want a bachelor’s degree in the subject you will teach plus a recognised teaching qualification such as a B.Ed. A mismatch, for example a commerce graduate teaching mathematics, can block approval even after years of teaching that subject in India. Early years and primary roles may carry different expectations, so compare your certificates with the post before applying.
- Attest your degree and B.Ed.. Your subject degree and your B.Ed. both usually need attestation, for the visa and for regulator approval. Indian certificates normally go through state authentication, the Ministry of External Affairs and the UAE Embassy before a final stamp from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Distance learning degrees sometimes face closer scrutiny, so ask the school early whether yours will be accepted.
- Work towards a UAE teaching licence. The UAE Teachers Licensure System, run at federal level, assesses teachers through subject and pedagogy exams before issuing a professional licence. Whether you need it before joining, or within a set period afterwards, depends on the emirate and the type of school, and the rules have changed over time. Ask the hiring school how it handles licensing and check the official ministry guidance.
- Prepare background checks and references. Schools usually ask for a police clearance certificate from India, recent references from a principal or head of department, and experience letters showing dates and subjects taught. Safeguarding is taken seriously, so unexplained gaps will be queried. Keep originals ready, because schools often complete these checks between the offer and the visa application.
What to change in an Indian-style CV
- Name the board, grades and subjects for every post, such as CBSE Grades 9 to 12 Physics, instead of just writing “PGT Science”.
- Explain Indian labels like PRT, TGT and PGT once in plain terms, since British and American curriculum schools use different job titles.
- Drop the biodata layout, declaration and signature, and open with a short teaching profile covering curriculum, results and pastoral responsibilities.
- Add board examination results or pass rates for your classes, stating the grade and the number of students each figure covers.
- List training in differentiation, inclusion, digital classrooms and safeguarding, because UAE school inspections look closely at these areas.
Boards, curricula and grade levels
UAE private schools follow several curricula side by side: CBSE and a smaller number of Kerala or ICSE-linked Indian schools, alongside British, American, IB and other international programmes. Your CV should make it easy to see where you fit. For each post, give the board, the grades, the subjects and whether you taught the senior secondary board years. If you have taught IGCSE, IB or another international syllabus, even briefly, highlight it, because it widens the range of schools that will consider you. Where your experience is only in a state board, mention any CBSE-aligned textbooks or national exam preparation you handled.
Class sizes and teaching conditions
Indian classrooms often hold forty students or more, while many UAE schools work with smaller groups. State your typical class size and number of sections, then show how you managed mixed abilities in that setting: group work, differentiated worksheets, remedial periods, peer tutoring. This helps a principal picture you with a class of twenty-five from a dozen nationalities. Mention any experience with students who have special educational needs or who are learning in English as an additional language, as UAE schools are expected to support both and inspectors ask how teachers adapt their lessons.
Evidence of student outcomes
Numbers carry weight with school leaders. Include board examination averages or pass rates for your classes, improvement from one term to the next, the share of students reaching a distinction, or olympiad and competition results. Always say what the figure covers, such as “Grade 12 Chemistry, 38 students”, and use results you can back up with school records. If your role was mainly in lower grades without board exams, show progress through internal assessments, reading levels or projects completed. Avoid percentages without context, since a principal cannot judge a result without knowing the cohort.
Pastoral care, co-curricular work and parents
UAE schools look for teachers who contribute beyond their timetable. Class teacher duties, house or club leadership, event organisation, exam coordination and CBSE evaluation work all deserve a line. Parent communication matters too, because families pay fees and expect regular updates; mention parent meetings, reports or learning platforms you used. Include professional development such as workshops on assessment, technology or inclusion with the provider named generically. Keep this section short and specific, with two or three bullets for your latest post, so it strengthens rather than buries your teaching experience.
