What a good cover letter does

A cover letter is not a second resume. Its job is to connect you to one specific role: why this job, why you, and what happens next. Three or four short paragraphs are enough, and the email version can be even shorter.

  1. Open with the exact role title and where you saw it, so HR can match your application quickly.
  2. Pick two or three achievements with a number or a clear outcome, and cut the rest.
  3. Add one line in your own words about why this company — its product, customers or the kind of work it does.
  4. Close with your availability or notice period and a polite request for a conversation.

Cover letter tips for freshers

Without a job history, lead with what you have done: internships, college projects, certifications, volunteering or a part-time job. Say what you learnt and how it applies to the role. Keep it honest — interviewers will ask about every line.

Make sure the resume you attach matches the letter: add a clear career objective, check it with the resume job match, and borrow wording from our profile summary examples. Before you send it, set up a professional email signature.

Worked example

A cover letter for a hotel front office supervisor

What goes in

Role: Front Office Supervisor at a business hotel Strengths: Opera PMS, handling group check-ins, training new associates Proof: trained 6 new associates in one season

What you get

The tool writes a standard letter in four short paragraphs: the role applied for, why the candidate fits, two pieces of proof and a polite close. It also writes a short email version, which is often what gets read when an online form has no space for a letter. Square brackets mark details left for her to fill, such as the hiring manager’s name and how she heard about the job. Before sending she replaces each bracket and adds one sentence about the hotel’s own guests, which a template cannot know.

Common mistakes

  • Sending the letter with square-bracket placeholders still in it, which immediately shows the recruiter it was not checked.
  • Repeating the resume line by line instead of picking two achievements that match this particular job.
  • Writing a full-page letter when the application only has a short message box; send the email version there instead.

When to use it: Use the cover letter generator when an application asks for a letter or a covering email; for a thank-you after an interview, use the follow-up email generator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Not always, but when a role gets many similar resumes, a short, specific letter can decide who gets the call. It matters most for freshers, career changers and roles that involve writing or client contact. Where there is no upload field, paste the short version into the email body.

Use the hiring manager’s or HR contact’s name if the job post or LinkedIn shows it — a greeting with a real name reads better than a generic one. If you cannot find a name, “Dear Hiring Manager” is perfectly acceptable and is what this generator uses.

Mention your notice period briefly if you are currently employed — recruiters in India and the Gulf often filter on it, and elsewhere it helps them plan a start date. Leave expected salary (CTC in India) out of the letter unless the job post asks for it; discuss numbers when HR calls you.

The standard version is a full letter to attach as a PDF or upload on a careers page. The short version is written for the body of an email, with a subject line, so the recruiter can read it in a few seconds before opening your resume.
