What changes when you apply abroad
- Paper size — the US and Canada print on US Letter; almost everywhere else uses A4. A PDF in the wrong size prints with odd margins or cut-off lines.
- Photo — expected in much of the Gulf, optional in India, Germany and Singapore, and best left off for the US, UK, Canada, Ireland and Australia.
- Personal details — date of birth, marital status, religion, a parent’s name and a signed declaration are traditional in some Indian resumes but rarely wanted abroad.
- Spelling — American English for the US, British English for the UK, Ireland, Australia, India, the Gulf and Singapore, and a mix in Canada.
- Length and name — one page is common in the US for early careers, two in the UK; the document itself is a “CV” in the UK and Ireland.
After converting
- Reread every converted line: spelling tools cannot tell a product name from an ordinary word.
- Add your right to work or visa status if an employer might otherwise wonder whether you need sponsorship.
- Tailor the summary and skills to the job, then download a fresh PDF with the new paper size.
