Resume skills for designers

Design skills sections are checked against the portfolio, so every skill listed should appear somewhere in a case study. Indian recruiters separate product design, research and brand skills, and look for Figma depth, accessibility awareness and developer handoff. Research methods and testing tools deserve their own lines rather than being folded into “UI/UX”.

How designers should list skills on a resume

  • Separate product design skills from graphic or brand skills. A fintech hiring manager and a D2C marketing head search for very different keywords.
  • Name Figma features you actually use, such as auto-layout, variants and variables. Listing them shows depth beyond basic screen drawing.
  • Back up research skills with numbers: “Conducted 20 interviews across 3 cities” is far more convincing than “user-centric mindset” and gives interviewers something concrete to ask about.

Why this skill matters for designers

Usability testing

  • It is a method skill, not a software tool, which shows the designer validates decisions with real users before handoff.
  • Usability testing appears in most product designer job descriptions, making it a reliable ATS keyword across startups and enterprises.
  • It invites a portfolio conversation about task completion or error rates, giving interviewers something measurable to discuss.

Before and after: fixing a weak version

BeforeSkills: Figma, Photoshop, creativity, attention to detail, communication
AfterTested the new loan-repayment screen with 9 borrowers in Indore using a clickable Figma prototype; moving the due date above the amount removed most wrong-date payments in the next release.

The bare list gives no proof. The bullet shows usability testing in action, with participants, location, the prototype used, the design change made and the effect it had after release.

Core skills for designers

The hard skills employers screen for first.

  1. User research and interviews Shows you design from evidence; mention participant counts, locations and what changed because of findings.
  2. Interaction design and user flows Employers want clear task flows; show before-and-after step counts from a real redesign.
  3. Wireframing and prototyping Low- to high-fidelity prototypes let teams test ideas cheaply before engineering time is spent.
  4. Visual design and typography Strong hierarchy, spacing and type choices make interfaces readable, including for Indic scripts.
  5. Design systems Building reusable components speeds up delivery; mention component count and teams using them.
  6. Usability testing Moderated or unmoderated tests prove impact; quote task-completion or error-rate changes you measured.
  7. Information architecture Crucial for dashboards and content-heavy apps; show card sorts or navigation restructures you led.
  8. Accessibility (WCAG) Contrast, focus states and screen-reader support are increasingly required by banks and public-sector clients.

Tools, software and certifications for designers

Name them exactly as they appear in job descriptions.

  1. Figma The default design and handoff tool in most Indian product teams; mention libraries and variables.
  2. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop Still essential for brand, packaging, illustration and marketing creatives in agencies and D2C brands.
  3. Adobe After Effects or Lottie Micro-interactions and app animations are expected in consumer products and onboarding screens.
  4. Miro or FigJam Used for workshops, affinity mapping and journey maps with remote stakeholders.
  5. Maze or similar remote testing tools Quick unmoderated tests help validate designs when in-person research budgets are tight.
  6. Google UX Design Certificate A recognised structured course that helps career changers show grounding in UX fundamentals.

Soft skills that matter for designers

Specific to this job — show them with an example, not an adjective.

  1. Presenting design rationale Explaining why a layout works, in business terms, helps you win stakeholder approval in reviews.
  2. Receiving and giving critique Design teams run on critique; show you can take feedback without defending every pixel.
  3. Negotiating scope with engineers Finding a simpler version that ships this sprint keeps design influence strong with tech teams.
  4. Empathy with low-literacy users Designing for first-time smartphone users in India needs patience, observation and plain-language thinking.
  5. Storytelling in case studies A clear problem-process-outcome narrative is what hiring managers assess in portfolio reviews.

How these examples are written

Written by the DigitalCVMaker team for designers applying in India. Every example is original — none is copied from a real person’s profile — and each is built around what employers and clients in this field look for: the role, a specialism, and proof you can back up. We revise the page when that changes; the date at the top shows the last update.

Only list skills you can back up with an example in your experience section or at interview.

FAQ

Skills for your resume for designers: questions

List them if you can build simple layouts or understand how components are implemented, since that improves handoff and earns respect from developers. Do not overstate it; most Indian product teams hire designers for design judgement, and a coding test is unlikely unless the role mentions front-end work.

List a tool only if you have used it in delivered work, such as generating early moodboards or placeholder copy, and explain how. Hiring managers are more interested in whether you can judge and refine outputs than in a long list of tools you tried once.
