Design heads in Indian fashion companies ask this to see if you understand the business side of the craft. Pick a strength visible in your collections or tech packs, and a weakness such as costing, digital tools or workload planning, rather than one suggesting weak creativity or no feel for fabric and fit.
My main strength is technical detailing. I create clear tech packs with graded measurements, stitch types, trims and placement diagrams, so tailors and factories can produce my designs accurately. During my Tiruppur internship, the production team told me my tech packs needed fewer corrections than most interns’. My weakness is costing. In college I sometimes designed pieces with extra panels and embellishment that pushed them well above the target price. To improve, I now calculate fabric consumption and trim costs while designing, not after, and a merchandiser taught me to use a basic costing sheet. My last six designs came within the target price band, and I’m continuing to practise this on every brief.
The weak answer offers an unprovable strength and a disguised boast. The rewrite shows a technical skill with a production outcome and a real communication gap with a specific fix.

I’m strong at trend research that actually fits Indian customers. Instead of copying runway looks, I compare them with what college students in Bengaluru and Indore are wearing, and I build mood boards that show the adapted version, not just the original. During my internship, the design manager used two of my boards for a kurti capsule. My weakness is speaking up in design meetings. I’ve often kept quiet even when I had a useful idea, and then watched someone else suggest it. I now prepare three short notes before every meeting and make sure I share at least one of them aloud. In my last month there, my suggestion to swap a pastel palette for earthy tones was used in the final line, which helped my confidence a lot.
For roughly 3 to 8 years in the field.
My key strength is balancing creativity with commercial sense. Before every season I sit with merchandisers to study sell-through by fit, colour and price point, and my co-ord sets designed after that analysis sold through faster than the category average last summer. My weakness is managing too many projects at once. During peak seasons, I used to say yes to extra requests from marketing and sourcing without checking my timeline, and two drops went late because of it. I now plan my workload with the merchandising head every Monday and keep a shared tracker, so any new request is visibly traded off against something else. This festive season, all four of my drops reached stores on the planned date.
I’m strong at buyer communication. I read each European buyer’s comments carefully, ask clarifying questions early and turn their feedback into accurate second samples, which has kept our approval rate high. My weakness has been digital design tools. For years I relied on hand sketches and flat drawings in Illustrator, but buyers increasingly expect 3D samples to cut shipping and sampling costs. I completed a CLO 3D course on weekends over three months and now build digital samples for simple woven tops and dresses. Last season, two buyers approved styles from the 3D files alone without a physical proto, which saved our team a courier cycle and about ten days.
For 10+ years, specialists and leaders.
My main strength is building design teams that grow. I give designers ownership of complete capsules, run fortnightly reviews and pair juniors with seniors for sampling visits, and three designers I hired as freshers now lead categories. My weakness is letting go of creative control. As the label grew, I kept making the final call on every embroidery placement and colour, which slowed approvals and made the team wait for me. I now set the season’s direction in a clear brief with references and price bands, and I let senior designers approve details within it, stepping in only at the final line review. Our last wedding capsule was led almost entirely by my team, delivered earlier than usual and received well in stores.
I’m strong at sustainable sourcing and building fair, long-term relationships with artisan clusters in Gujarat and Bengal. My weakness has been scaling these practices for larger orders. Handloom and natural dye production is slower and more variable, and early on I promised delivery dates that the clusters could not realistically meet. I now plan responsible collections a full season ahead, split key styles across two clusters, agree buffer stock for bestsellers and share realistic lead times with retail teams from the start. Our most recent sustainable collection reached stores on schedule, and our artisan partners have received more regular orders throughout the year rather than one seasonal rush.
Written by the DigitalCVMaker team for fashion designers applying in India. Every example is original — none is copied from a real person’s profile — and each is built around what employers and clients in this field look for: the role, a specialism, and proof you can back up. We revise the page when that changes; the date at the top shows the last update.
These are examples to adapt, not real people. Swap in your own numbers, specialisation, city and achievements — it only works when every word is true for you.
Only if the role has dedicated pattern makers and you can show steps you are taking to improve, such as a short course or regular practice. For roles where pattern making is core, especially in small studios, choose a different weakness.
Mention a course completed, styles developed digitally and any buyer or internal approvals based on 3D samples. If possible, include digital samples in your portfolio, so the interviewer can see the quality of your work directly.
